Birthday photoshoots often get framed as something women do, but a well-planned session works just as well for men. Here are the questions men ask most before booking one.

Do men actually book birthday photoshoots?

Yes. Birthday sessions are booked by men just as often for milestone years, personal achievements, or simply choosing to mark the year properly instead of letting it pass with a few phone photos. It’s not about performing for the camera — it’s the same instinct that leads anyone to want one good photograph of a year that actually mattered, rather than a blurry group shot from a party three weeks later.

What should I wear?

Fit matters more than the outfit itself. A well-fitted shirt, a good jacket, or simple tailoring photographs better than anything busy or oversized — a jacket that closes without pulling and a collar that holds its shape will do more for the final images than an expensive piece that doesn’t quite fit. One or two strong outfit options are usually enough: one clean and versatile, one with a bit more presence if the session calls for it. Solid colours over prints, and bring a watch, ring or chain if you want a detail frame or two.

What mood or style should I go for?

Skip trying to copy a look you saw online and start with how you actually want to come across — sharp and clean, relaxed and casual, or something with a bit of edge. A clear direction gives the photographer something real to work with, rather than guessing what you’re going for on the day, and it also helps you feel relaxed and more confident once the session starts, because you’re not trying to hit a look you haven’t fully decided on yet.

If you’re not sure where to start, think about how you’d want a friend to describe the photographs afterwards. “He looked sharp” points somewhere different to “he looked like himself, just on a good day” — both are good answers, but they call for different lighting, different backdrops and a different pace through the session.

Can I bring my partner or friends?

Yes. Some men want a clean set of solo portraits, others want the session to double as a group moment with a partner or close friends. Decide this ahead of time, since it changes how long the session needs to be and how it should be structured — a solo segment followed by a group segment tends to work better than mixing the two throughout, because everyone stays sharp for their part rather than waiting around mid-session.

If people are joining you, agree the look and the arrival time in advance. One person turning up underdressed, or thirty minutes into someone else’s photos, is the most common thing that eats into session time.

I don’t know how to pose — is that a problem?

No. This is the most common hesitation, and it’s the photographer’s job to handle, not yours. Posture, angle and expression are all directed through the session, so you’re never left guessing what to do with your hands or where to look. Most of what looks effortless in a finished photograph is the result of small, specific direction in the moment — a slight turn of the shoulders, a different angle of the chin — not something the person in front of the camera worked out alone.

Giving yourself something to do also helps: holding a jacket over one shoulder, leaning against something solid, or walking towards the camera all remove the self-consciousness that comes from simply standing and being told to smile.

Is a birthday photoshoot worth it for a “normal” birthday, not just a milestone?

Yes. A photoshoot doesn’t need a big number attached to it. It works just as well for any birthday you want to actually mark, rather than let pass unphotographed — plenty of people book a session for the year itself, not the number on the cake. If it’s a year you want to remember clearly, that’s reason enough.

Plan the rest of it

Once you’ve got a sense of the mood and who’s coming, the practical side is straightforward. What to wear covers fit, colour and fabric in more depth, how to prepare walks through the countdown to the day itself, and if you’re marking a specific age, the milestone birthday guide covers 18th through 70th sessions.
